Pepper Marmalade Glazed Black Forest Ham Sandwich

The art of making a great sandwich involves taking your favorite meal and slapping it between two slices of good bread. It’s really is that simple. Think about it, you already know what meals you love, so by sandwiching together those same flavors, you know it’s going to be good.

Thanksgiving sandwiches with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce have been the rage for years, but I decided it was time to give another holiday a shot, so I created a sandwich using the flavors of Easter.

My Easter ham is glazed with pepper mustard marmalade and slow roasted or smoked, until the ham is heated through and juicy. The day after Easter, I pile the ham on tender challah bread or brioche and layer it with spring vegetables.

When I’m not up for cooking a whole ham, it’s a whole lot easier to use deli-sliced ham instead. Hillshire Farm has a new collection of lunchmeats called Naturals. They come in four varieties: slow roasted turkey, hardwood smoked turkey breast, honey roasted ham and black forest ham.

I love love love smoked meats, so I used the black forest ham on this Easter sandwich. It’s naturally smoked with a blend of hardwoods without any artificial ingredients, preservatives, colors or nitrates.

And the cut on the meat is perfect. Sometimes, deli meat can be sliced too thin where the pieces stick together and are almost mush. Not these slices. They are just the right thickness. You can taste the ham and hint of smokiness in every bite.

I layered this sandwich with Hillshire Farm Naturals Black Forest Ham, a little glaze, a smear of chive butter and some thinly sliced radishes for crunch. Then, I topped it with some baby arugula picked fresh from my garden.

The hubby approved. It was such a satisfying sandwich that we ate them for lunch and dinner.

Oh, and I’ve got to mention the container. It’s reusable, resalable and the perfect shape for packing a traditional lunch sandwich to go. Enjoy!

Marmalade Glazed Black Forest Ham Sandwiches

Servings: 3 sandwiches

Ingredients 

  • 4 tablespoons softened salted butter
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives
  • 2 tablespoons orange marmalade
  • 2 tablespoons pepper jelly
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1 loaf challah bread
  • 3 radishes, thinly sliced
  • 1 8- ounce package Hillshire Farm Naturals Black Forest Ham
  • Arugula

Instructions 

  • In a small bowl, combine the softened butter and chives; set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the orange marmalade, pepper jelly, mustard and soy sauce and microwave for 45 seconds. Stir to combine.
  • Heat a griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Cut the bread into 2×4-inch sections and then slice in half. Place the inside of the bread on the hot skillet. Toast for 2-3 minutes.
  • Assemble the sandwich by spreading chive butter on the bottom half of the bread.
  • Add a single layer of thinly sliced radishes.
  • Follow with 4 slices of Hillshire Farm Naturals Black Forest Ham.
  • Spoon on the pepper marmalade glaze.
  • Top with arugula and the top half of the bread.
  • Enjoy!
