Christie will join more than 300 food competitors on Fremont Street to compete in the World Food Championships Nov. 7-10.
The 2nd annual tournament-style culinary showdown brings trained chefs and home cooks together in front of a live audience and a discerning panel of celebrity judges, until one is named the 2013 World Food Champ.
Christie is the owner and recipe developer for Zestuous LLC. She has been cooking for more than 20 years and bases her recipes on what she’s learned traveling the world as an Army wife.
Last year, Christie participated in the inaugural World Food Championships as a sous chef. This year, she earned her own entry into the sandwich category by winning the World Food Championships #FoodChamp challenge.
“I’m excited and nervous,” said Christie. “Last year, was intense. Along with cheering crowds of tourists and a mad-rush in kitchen arena, the food competitors were among the country’s best.”
While Christie has taken culinary short courses at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, she is mostly self-taught.
“When I travel, I immerse myself in food and culture. I take what I experience and fuse flavors together balancing heat, acid and creaminess to create dishes that are Zestuous,” she said.
Through Zestuous, Christie has developed recipes for Mazola, King’s Hawaiian, Saucy Mama and Biscoff. Saucy Mama, a Barhyte Specialty Foods’ signature brand, is sponsoring Christie at the competition.
Christie has also appeared in cookalongs for MasterChef and with World Food Championship host Ben Vaughn.
In addition to competing, Christie has connected with dozens of competitors from around the country to answer their questions about Las Vegas. She has also created a “Local’s Guide to the WFC” that highlights local grocery stores, restaurant supply stores transportation tips and more.
“I have the advantage of knowing where to shop for the best groceries in the valley, but I don’t want to win this because of a local advantage. I want to start on a level playing field and win on what I can do in the kitchen,” she said.
Christie will compete 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 on Fremont Street. Sandwich category winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. If Christie makes the to the top 10, she will move on to compete 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 9.
